On March 6th 1984 miners at Cortonwood Colliery in Yorkshire went on strike. Six days later, on March 12th, NUM President, Arthur Scargill, made the strike official across Britain. And so began the UK’s biggest strike since the General Strike of 1926. It ran for almost a year until March 1985 - a year of bitter conflict between the miners and Margaret Thatcher and her government and marked the end of the mining era in Britain.\n\n24 year-old Michael Kerstgens was studying photography in Germany at the time. But he had strong links with South Wales having been born in Llanelli and spending his early years there. His father had also spent twelve years working in South Wales for an engineering company involved with the mining industry. As a sixteen year old Kerstgens took a summer job at the company’s Swansea office. He also experienced the underground life of the miners at Cynheidre Colliery. It’s not surprising therefore that once Kerstgens heard about the strike he went to South Wales to find out what was going on and to start what would be his first major photography project.\n\nKerstgens’ friends and contacts enabled him access to much that was closed off to the press and when he later moved on to Yorkshire he lived with the family of a striking miner whose wife, Marsha Marshall, was one of the leading lights of Woman Against Pit Closures (WAPC). He even met Arthur Scargill. The resultant photographs offer a powerful insight into what was a brutal strike that tore a rift through British society, entire mining communities, and even individual families.\n\nMichael Kerstgens has worked as a photographer and educator since 1986. In 2007 he became Professor of Documentary Photography at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. Appointed to the German Photographic Association in 2006, he has received the Imke Folkerts Prize for Fine Art, a VG Bild-Kunst grant and the Rühr Prize for Art and Science. The Corporeal Life of Seafaring

Limited edition of 1,000 signed copies including a signed and numbered print handmade by the artist\n\nThis new publication from Justine Kurland presents two interwoven narratives drawn from the road trips across the United States that she undertook with her young child between the years 2005 and 2010. The first thread is a sequence of arresting large-format photographs of her child and herself, disentangled from the renowned images of roads, trains, infrastructure, and fellow travelers Kurland was making at the same time. Revisiting these photographs, Kurland suggests a clarified reading of them as an anti-history of family and travel, upending the conventional family album to tell a story of queer motherhood and image-making in step with Kurland’s maternal line, for whom crossing the American landscape was a matter of dire necessity.\n\nOn the other side of this unspooling concertina publication are Kurland’s photographs of the railroads which traverse the American landscape. This Train

Signed by the photographer, this signed edition includes a slip signed by the artist and glued into the inside back cover.\n\n\nThe German dramatist Heiner Müller observed that German history lies as if smothered by a rheumatism blanket: beneath there is warmth and stagnation, just enough to give the impression all is well, while the peripheries are freezing. Georg Kussmann’s photographs in FRG were created under this metaphoric blanket. Made in the Federal Republic of Germany over a single summer, they depict everyday scenes of life, work, and leisure under which threats of discontent and violence simmer. Sometimes this unease is explicit in the form of physical acts or graffitied slogans, but more often it is uncannily suppressed.\n\n\nKussmann made these photographs by exploring his home country on foot, sleeping on the streets and often propelled to keep moving by fear as much as curiosity. Cross Road Blues presents a selection of 33 photographs from UK-based Oli Kellett’s iconic series of the same name. Kellett began the project in 2016 during a visit Los Angeles, during which time the United States was literally at a political crossroads. “This book is an early vignette from Michael Kenna’s far-reaching photographic odyssey. Some of these photographs, made almost forty years ago, are familiar, even famous, but many have never been seen before. They have been lying in wait, stored in a series of negative files. Normally, Kenna travels extensively and is not able to keep up with printing his extensive collection of negatives. It took the Covid pandemic and lockdown for him to search through his archives, rediscover these long-forgotten images, and print them in his darkroom. These photographs reveal a Northern England from Kenna’s youth that, for the most part, no longer exists.” — From the Introduction\n\nMichael Kenna was born in the small industrial town of Widnes in northwest England. The youngest of six children, Kenna grew up in a poor, working-class, Irish-Catholic family. He attended a seminary school for seven years with the intention of becoming a priest, after which he studied at the Banbury School of Art and later at the London College of Printing, before moving to the USA in the late seventies.\n\nThe adjoining counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire, where Kenna photographed in the early eighties, have much in common regarding their industrial development. Fiercely competitive, they share a border, a spine of mountains known locally as the Pennines, which helps to produce rain. The rise of a powerful cotton and wool industry, and the building of innumerable mills, canals, railways, chimneys and terraced worker houses, have been attributed in part to these high levels of precipitation. The local textile industry proliferated until the second half of the twentieth century, when there was a sudden, rapid decline and eventual decimation. It was during this precise time period that Kenna returned to the area to photograph, during the day and also at night.\n\nKenna’s early photographs of England launched his career and brought him international acclaim; yet it wasn’t until last year, 2020, that he revisited this particular body of work to find many unprinted images. I walked around wide-eyed, awestruck by the grandeur of its architecture and esthetics. I inhaled the atmosphere, the faint smell of incense, the whisperings from the crowds of other people also experiencing these wonders in their own particular ways. I lit candles and sat in front of the altar praying quietly, relishing the tranquility and meditative ambience. I listened to the choir as it practiced for Vespers. This was in 1972, on my first visit to Paris?    My affection for Notre-Dame has only increased over the years. Now, when arriving in Paris, often early in the morning and jet-lagged, I greatly enjoy a ritual walk along the Seine to the Île de la Cité and Notre-Dame, where I can spend some solitary time. Of course, I am never alone. Notre-Dame is an extremely important religious, national and cultural monument, with over twelve million visitors annually. Fortunately, it is always possible to find a quiet pew and reconnect with this alluring space. Notre-Dame continues to capture and inspire my imagination.   On Monday, April 15, 2019, along with countless other people throughout the world, I was shocked and saddened to see the media coverage of Notre-Dame burning. It seemed unimaginable that this architectural wonder, filled with over eight centuries of history, memories and mystique could be destroyed in a few hours. Yet, this devastating fire was happening before our eyes. In the days after the fire, I looked through my archive of negatives for some personal homage to this most beloved place that has given me so much. The fourteen photographs in this book, many of which I have just printed for the first time, were made over a period of forty years on my various wanderings through Paris. That particular morning was brutally cold, and heavy snow fell relentlessly. The lake was completely frozen over and white. I remember the muffled silence of the place, broken only by the piercing calls of hungry swans as they slid across the ice.'    'I have photographed countless trees, but this one had a special character, like an oversized bonsai - elegant, and graphically powerful. In keeping with the style and concerns of the earlier work, the Corridor photographs were originally intimate, pull-and-peel Polaroid prints shot in Hollywood's aging apartment buildings. It was to be an authentic 'coming of age' summer for him. Since then, Kenna has documented the slow decline and eventual fall of the hotel. In June 2008, the crumbling structure burnt to the ground. Mont St Michel  by Michael Kenna  Limited Editiion of 250 signed and numbered copies in Slipcase.     The small tidal island of Mont St Michel is situated just off the Normandy coast, connected to the mainland by a single causeway. Its abbey rises like a mirage, high above the sea, on this craggy, rocky perch. It is a spectacular sight, and one that Kenna has been drawn to many times over the years. By day, the island is alive with cars, buses, people, noise. It can seem a garish place. But at night, it becomes as originally intended: a place for peace, prayer, and quiet contemplation. It is that gentler face of Mont St Michel that Kenna wanted to photograph and, after the crowds have gone home, he has been able to do so. Alone, he has climbed the bell tower, explored the crypts and chapels, and ambled along the silent lanes of the island. He has watched, totally undisturbed, as the light changed, shadows came and went, and clouds subtley floated this way and that. While his camera shutter was open for long, long exposures, Kenna cherished the silence. He sees these photographs as a personal record of this time of solitary exploration; it is a record we are privileged to share. Mont St Michel (Limited Edition)

In The Museum Project, Korean photographer Atta Kim commandeers average scenes-city streets, department stores, freight depots, and forests-and turns them into exhibition spaces. On display are people crammed into acrylic boxes, stacked in sets, on end, or sometimes alone. In selecting his subjects and isolating them in their boxes, Kim aims to  detach them from reality; to display and deconstruct at the same time my own concept of the world.  Kim compares his efforts to that of an archaeologist, sifting through the cultural strata in order to unearth and hold up exemplary objects for our contemplation. The Museum Project is comprised of a number of series, such as  War Memorial, Sex, Suicide, and other human typologies, each intended to highlight a particular mode of behavior or belief. In certain series, the subjects are isolated from their natural settings, each display case simply framed and offset by backdrops in primary colors. The resulting images are curious and startling, straddling the indeterminate ground between performance, photography, and an alternate form of anthropology.  The subject of history is, finally, nothing but human beings,  Kim says.  [The] great order of . . . the cosmos is that all kinds of acts conducted by human beings are always watched by someone.

CALAIS LACE   Published by Nazraeli Press   Signed by the Photographer    Since 1993 Michael Kenna has visited Calais many times and wandered at length throughout the town, photographing its urban landscapes and its proud industrious heart: the lace factories. On his first visit he met Annette Haudiquet, then head curator of the Mus?e des Beaux-Arts et de la Dentelle. It was during this meeting that the idea for the book Calais Lace, and the exhibition it accompanies, was born. Pursuing the memories that still haunt the old laceworks of Calais, Michael Kenna's photographs capture a past deeply ingrained in the life of this town. The artist's own childhood in a working-class neighbourhood near Liverpool, together with his work on the Lancashire and Yorkshire cotton mills, led him to develop a language specific to a geography of disaster, the poetics of working-class escapism and the outdoors as a refuge. In Calais Lace, Kenna captures the spirit of this town and marks out the character-traits of a hardworking people. This first Nazraeli Press edition of Calais Lace is limited to 1,000 copies. It opens with an essay by No.l Jouenne, a PhD in social anthropology who shares with us his intimate knowledge of the vocabulary, the names of the sometimes eccentric-looking objects and their uses.
