Rodger was a Life magazine photographer during World War II, but in 1945 he reached a breaking point after having witnessed for years the atrocities of that war. He became determined to find a world in which universal values prevailed and the horror of war could never be repeated. With that, arguably naive, intent, he traveled to Africa on a quest for a society untarnished by civilization. He found the Nubas, a southern Sudanese people living in the region around Kordofan, and developed a series of pictures of and writings about them and their customs. His photographs and writings serve as an intimate and revealing record of the state of Africa just before the modernizing changes of the postwar era began. Using a Rolleiflex and a Leica to capture images, and keeping copious diaries, Rodger invented the genre of   package stories, which he sold to magazines like National Geographic. His famous portrait of a dignified Korongo Nuba wrestling champion being carried aloft the shoulders of his defeated foe caught the attention of the German photographer Leni Riefenstahl, who would later document the Nubas herself. Villa Mona, a proper kind of house

Essay by Ed Vega.    To live in Spanish Harlem, New York's oldest barrio, is to confront some of the city's most endemic problems: crime, drugs, AIDS, and chronic unemployment. These images won Jim Rice the prestigous Ilford Photographer of the Year award back in 1990. Deptford Creek has been a working river for centuries and with the establishment of Henry VIII's Royal Dockyard in 1513, it became an important shipbuilding area and home to a growing number of factories and shipping companies. By the 18th century, Deptford was firmly established as a prosperous shipping parish. It was from Deptford that Elizabeth I set off to tackle the Armada and from where Sir Francis Drake set sail for his voyage round the world in 1577. Christopher Marlowe was murdered and is buried here, Tsar Peter the Great came incognito to learn shipbuilding skills here and Samuel Pepys was a long-term resident in the area. The Deptford Creek of today, however, quickly dispels any romantic view of the area. As the bulldozers move in, Jim Rice's photographs capture an image of Deptford Creek that will soon be lost. In 1990, Rice won the Ilford Photographer of the Year award for his work on Deptford Creek.

Tony Ray Jones    American Colour 1962-1965   American Colour 1962-1965 is a carefully edited selection of previously unpublished Tony Ray-Jones colour photographs from the earliest period of his work. Taken from the extensive archives held at the National Media Museum in Bradford by Liz Jobey, this book brings together the early experiments that would inform his later work.   Ray-Jones arrived in America in 1961 on a scholarship to Yale to study graphic art and he returned to England four years later. It was in America that he learned to be a photographer. Among New York?s street parades, on Fifth Avenue, in Times Square, Chinatown and Little Italy he learned to extract individual moments from a crowded backdrop and to find order in the chaos of the street. Based in New York, he made trips across the country - west to Detroit, south to Florida - all the time making colour pictures alongside the black and white images for which he would later became known.   Ray-Jones later referred to these early photographs as 'isolated sketches', and they were clearly a part of his formative experience. At the time colour was considered vulgar and not the medium of serious photography, but for Ray-Jones it expressed the excitement of America in a way that black and white could not.   'I found America a very colour-conscious country,' he said. 'Colour is very much part of their culture, and they use it in crazy ways. You look down Madison Avenue at lunchtime and the colours just vibrate.'   Tony Ray-Jones (1941-1972) was born in Somerset, educated at Christ's Hospital school and the London School of Printing, from which he won a scholarship to Yale to study graphic art. He arrived in America in 1961, and between studying for a Masters, spent increasing amounts of time in New York, where he studied under and worked for Alexey Brodovitch and made friends with fellow photographers including Joel Meyerowitz and Garry Winogrand. He worked as a designer at CBS Records and as an art director for several magazines before committing to freelance photography full-time. He returned to England at the end of 1965 and made the series of photographs that would be published posthumously, after his early death from leukemia, as A Day Off: An English Journal (1974). Tony Ray-Jones will not be a name known to many but it was Ray-Jones unique approach to photography which would influence the new generation of photographers emerging into the 1970's Chris Steele-Perkins and Martin Parr to name but two.   Studying graphic design at the London College of Printing he was encouraged by his photography teacher to take up photography and introduced him to his brother photographer Bill Brandt, Ray-Jones recalled that his photos, 'made Bill Laugh a little, they amused him' and he advised him 'to get in Closer'. From London Ray-Jones moved to Yale where he had won a scholarship. His interest in photography continued and Ray-Jones attended classes at the New York Design Laboratory run by Alexey Brodovich. It was Brodovitch's emphasis on freshness in visual expression which was to have a major influence on Ray-Jones.   After graduating from Yale Ray-Jones became a freelance photographer, working in New York, whose emerging group of photographers Winogrand and Meyerowitz amongst them was to prove a huge stimulus on his photography.   Having been in the USA for 5 years Ray-Jones returned to England in 1966. In 1967 he began working on his own project to document the English customs and traditions, its pronounced class system and the English eccentricity, touring the country in an old VW camper van between Newspaper assignments. It was from this body of work that the book 'The English at Home' was later published.

Confabulations

In the summer of 2004, Richard Rothman traveled west with a 4x5 camera to explore the remaining fragments of ancient old-growth forests in Northern California. He pitched a tent amid the mammoth stands of redwoods and began making formal, intricate portraits of the forest, which he describes as 'the most visually stimulating environment I had ever been in.' Unexpectedly, he also began developing an interest in the neighboring town of Crescent City, an economically depressed logging and fishing community. Rothman was affected by the town s architecture, its emotional tenor, its political and religious culture, and the sometimes unconscious relationship that the townspeople had with the corralled forest to the east and the Pacific Ocean, which represents the end of the Western frontier. The contrast between the radical, spectacularly ornate environment of the forest and the trashed, disposable landscape of the town that abutted it became the subject of a more complex project which would take some surprising twists and turns. The body of work, made over a five-year period, is gathered together in the artist s monumental first book, Redwood Saw. This stunning monograph is an ambitious attempt to represent the culture, people, and landscape of Crescent City, and, by extension, the current American moment. Signed by the Photographer   Ouarzazate is a small city in the Moroccan desert famous for its movie studios and filming locations, an industry which began with David Lean and Lawrence of Arabia.   Invited by the American Friends of the Marrakech Museum for Photography and the Visual Arts to propose a project for his artist residency there, Ruwedel photographed the movie sets in 2014 and 2016.   Much of the filming activity in Ouarzazate has been for costume and Biblical epics. Cleopatra, The Garden of Eden, The Mummy, The Last Temptation of Christ; but also The Sheltering Sky and The Hills Have Eyes. Many of the sets appear to have been abandoned while others are constantly repurposed.   An Egyptian portal leads to a medieval village. An authentic Kasbah in ruins is actually a ruined replica of a ?real? Kasbah elsewhere. Shepherds drive their flocks past ?ancient? siege machines and Roman columns. ?I was reminded of certain passages in Nathaniel West?s Day of the Locust.?   Far from the American deserts where he has produced much of his work of the past thirty years, in Morocco Ruwedel continues his long term interest in contemporary ruins and the histories of both landscape and landscape photography. The photographs are eerily reminiscent of 19th century European photography of ancient Egypt and the Middle East. In Plain Air

Torbjørn Rødland's photography is direct but idiosyncratic, pushing at the boundaries of aesthetic and social norms. His fifth book, Vanilla Partner, continues in this vein, combining images of fetishized isolation in a layout that rejects the linear structure of thematic photography books. Rødland's practice navigates through the problematic and seemingly unchanging heart of popular photography. Accepting neither the humanist realism of most photographic portraiture nor the postmodern role-play, Vanilla Partner explores the cultural complexities and archaic foundation of contemporary image-making. Reconstructed scenes of ultrasoft BDSM read like twisted metaphors for photography's ability to freeze or capture. The book title, dripping in innuendo, also poses a question about the ambiguity of the relationship between the artist and his medium. Is Rødland acknowledging the medium's straight foundation or does he see himself dominated by it? Many of the images also have explicit political references, often linked to the 1980 US Presidential election. From the stark Californian coast to the vast expanses of the interior – many of which have been further lain bare by wildfires – Ruwedel tracks a unique ecology in constant, if subtle,dialogue with the human life that surrounds it: one where wildness is designed, contested, permitted, or resisted to varying degrees of success. In this first of four volumes, \nRuwedel follows the Los Angeles River from Big Tujunga Wash to the Pacific Ocean. Using patient, forensic large- and medium-format photography in black and white, Ruwedel recalls the legacy of nineteenth-century photographer-cartographers such as Carleton Watkins and Timothy O’Sullivan, as well as land artists and New Topographics photographers of the 1970s, while forging his own elucidating relationship with the landscape.
