Family Photographs

Softcover in slipcase   Limited to 1,750 copies      One of the most influential photographers of our time, Nobuyoshi Araki is known for his diaristic style or ?shi-shashin? (I-photographs) through the publication of over 500 books throughout his career.  His work has become practically synonymous with Japanese photography; closely associated with his work on bondage, his late wife, Yoko, as well as still lifes and nudes.  It is, however, less known that Araki had explored experimental film projects since the mid 80s. In 1986 at Cinema Rise in Tokyo, Araki staged a live performance entitled Tokyo Monogatari (Tokyo Story). Using two projectors, Araki and his assistants, Nobuhiko Ansai and Shiro Tamiya, selected and sequenced slides to create a succession of overlapping images fading into one another, accompanied by a musical soundtrack. Tokyo Monogatari became the first in a series of live performances entitled Arakinema, which he staged until the mid-2000s in museums and art institutions around the world. Blue Period and Last Summer are made up primarily of nudes and portraits alternating with street scenes and images of flowers.  The majority of the work is derived from Shashin Jidai, the important underground sub culture magazine of the 1980s in Japan.  We especially feel excited about our publication since these two projects are essential among his film work. As Araki also explained at our initial meeting in Shinjuku last year, ?The two films should be seen as a set, since Blue Period is about the past and Last Summer is about the future. By removing color using a chemical solution, Blue Period is about an act of subtraction (past), whereas adding color to the images in Last Summer is about an act of addition (future). This project is just like life itself.? Working directly from the 140 original slides used for both projections, the book successfully offers a fresh review of the photographer?s hidden oeuvre and regains the true spirit and atmosphere of the original Arakinema performances.

Robert Adams - The question of Hope   The question of hope is especially urgent because of environmental threats. One such peril, deforestation, is the subject of the first half of this book, where pictures of it suggest a war zone. The subject of the second half of the book, light on the sea, might initially seem disconnected from the first, but in combination they have about them what Samuel Johnson once called 'the stability of truth,' in this case a recognizable balance of harsh facts and dateless, mysterious consolation. Robert Adams has studied both elements 'our failed stewardship and the promise implied by beauty' across much of the American West. He has over the years also photographed them near where he lives on the Oregon coast, and it is this local caring that gives The Question of Hope much of its intensity. Anrakuji

Desirer Walks the Streets presents a dark stream of black and white photographs that are culled from Andy Summers's life as a traveling musician. From a working life that outwardly would appear to be extroverted and chaotic, Summers has created a set of quietly compelling images that contradict the obvious.    Made between 1983 and 2008, with a preference for the night shot, and covering a wide geographical graph from the Alto Plano of Bolivia to the alleys of the Golden Gai in Tokyo, the photographs convey a sense of intimacy, surrealism and situations that may be described as 'in media res.' Summers states that his photography may indeed be influenced by his absorption with music and that in a sense the photography he creates is a visual counterpart to the music that never leaves his head.    Thus in Summers musical predilections 'that may be termed as a taste for the melancholic, the convulsive melodic line, the dark chord with a few stray notes added' we find the brooding minor key photography he is attracted to. He adds that music and photography are kindred spirits in that they are nonverbal arts, but handily, may have interchangeable terms. He describes his own act of photography as tearing pages from a book and then reshuffling the results into a new visual syntax. THE GRAND TOUR  by Dick Arentz     Signed by the Photographer     Dick Arentz first established his reputation in the 1970s with his photographs of the American Southwest, and later turned his attention to the southern and central agricultural states. Grand Tour

In the last ten years, the Austrian-born artist Irene Andessner has been working on a new definition of the self-portrait. Inspired by women's portraits from past centuries, she researches her chosen subjects in archives and libraries, only to enter into an alliance with them by means of photography, video and computer technology. Via new media, Andessner abducts these historical personages--women such as Nannerl Mozart, Frida Kahlo and Angelika Kauffmann--into the world of today, putting a cell phone or Polaroid camera into their hands.  In 2001, Andessner immersed herself in explorations of the person and myth of Marlene Dietrich, investigating the actress's innermost feelings and thoughts. In the course of a few months, Andessner was able to mentally and visually  transform  herself into Dietrich: accompanied by newspaper reporters and TV cameras, she went all the way to the Berlin registry office, where she married a Mr. Dietrich in order to make it official. Including this work and others, I am, designed by the artist herself, features a representative selection of Andessner's work.

Irene Andessner: I am

For fifteen years, men have been the focus of Thomas Frederick Arndt's street photographs: men at work, men in transit, men at bars, men in uniform, men at rest. Arndt describes the photos as  pictures of ... our male family,  and in them he documents, through his unique vision, an Everyman as full of pathos as Arthur Miller's Willie Loman.    Arndt provides an unrelenting look at the often lonely, sometimes alienated, always eyecatching position of American men in contemporary society. Men are always looking. For something. These photographs echo the question raised by Larry Heinemann in the introduction:  Men in America. Who are we?  He captures their common expressions and gestures against a backdrop of tickertape parades, the New Orleans jazz festival, the Holocaust Survivors convention, and gatherings of street punks.     These men are the spiritual heirs of that classic place in Robert Frank's The Americans. Like Frank, Larry Heinemann, a Vietnam Vet and National Book Award-winning author, considers the raw dilemma of men and the uncertain assumption about their new roles in society today.
