A Civil Rights Journey presents the astonishing archive of Dr Doris Derby: photographer, activist, and professor of anthropology. Active throughout the Civil Rights Movements of the mid twentieth century in the southern United States, particularly Mississippi, Derby acted as a photographer, organiser and teacher, making photographs of the intimate and human side of the everyday struggle for survival and human rights. She photographed both the organisation of political events, meetings, and funerals, alongside the literacy, co-operative and community theatre programmes, many of which she founded, and encountered much danger and tragedy along the way.\n\nHere we see the speeches and protests that gave the movement its defining moments, as well as vital figures including Muhammad Ali, Alice Walker, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Jesse Jackson. A Cival Rights Journey

?If you follow the river north from Mora, you will reach a community with a dark, insular spirit?. Embedded in this historical enigma of a place and its people, Elf Dalia by Maja Daniels weaves together a narrative born out of the Swedish valley of Älvdalen. Daniels combines photographs taken from 2011 to 2017 with curious pictures from an archive amassed by a man named Tenn Lars Persson (1878 ?1938), a local inventor, mechanic and photographer. These two artists come together across centuries to create a coherent narrative; in doing so, Elf Dalia naturally draws attention to possible fictions of documentary photography. Layered with the relics of this remote region, which to this day speaks the near-extinct ancient language of Elfdalian, this book explores how the myth and ritual of its past is compromised by contemporary living.   The region?s geographical isolation, delineated by forest, mountains and lakes, sits at the core of Daniels? and Persson?s work. A snow-covered landscape creates an eerie setting that calls to mind the witch trials that originated in the region in 1668. Persson?s early photographic experimentation results in strange, uncanny photographs: in one, two men seem to hover mid air, in another, two women sit together on a crescent moon. Woven within these works, Daniels photographs preside in a similar territory, spanning the mystical and vernacular with a kindred symbolic language. Like Persson, she depicts the day-to-day life of this community: in their homes, by the lake, with their families. Yet emerging from this sense of the community are portraits illustrating a younger generation as it tries to negotiate the friction between tradition and modernity in Älvdalen. Duncan began taking pictures for newspapers in the mid-1930s, exploring the broad range of human nature - from the most quiet notes of life to the crashing crescendos of war. American Photographs

This first in-depth publication of photographer Tim Davis's work dissects the disenchantment and dissociation that have come to dominate American civil life. Dark Days     John Darwell     Hardcover,    New     Published by Dewi Lewis     This work produced around my home on the north side of the English Lake District looks at the Foot and Mouth epidemic that swept through the UK in 2001 and became one of the most devastating and significant events to affect the British countryside within living memory, the aftershock of which will continue to shape the future of the countryside for decades to come. The images look to all affected areas from the Lake District fells closed to walkers to the measures farmers went to in order to keep people away from their farms for fear of infection, to the destruction of millions of farm animals and onto the now notorious pyres. The work then continues by recording the extraordinary efforts undertaken by farmers to eradicate the virus from their buildings; and finally the third part of the work looks at the aftermath of the disease and the gradual reopening of the countryside whilst asking questions about the future of the agricultural economy as more and more farms were put up for sale.

Dark Days

Jimmy Jock, Albert & the Six Sided Clock     John Darwell     Commissioned by the Merseyside Maritime Museum this work looks at the changes affecting the Port of Liverpool during a period of major transition. The workforce was reduced from many thousands to a few hundred dock employees, whilst the traditional warehouses were being demolished to make way for container depots. My aim was to capture this process and the people caught up in these changes.     Published by Cornerhouse Publications in 1993.

John Darwell     Working Lives     An exploration of the many clothing industries working in and around Manchester, England. The images concentrate on the traditional and endangered areas of hatting, clog making and leather tanneries, capturing not only the startling 'Dickensian' environments but also the people who spend their working lives using processes that have essentially remained unaltered for the last one hundred years. Since this work was completed the majority of the locations visited have subsequently closed down.     Published as a catalogue by Stockport Art Gallery in 1986.

Based in Carlisle, John Darwell is one of the UK?s leading contemporary photographers. His work has been published and exhibited internationally, including in London, Amsterdam, the USA, Mexico, South America and the Canary Islands. He is represented in a number of important collections, including those of the National Media Museum, Bradford, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.    2007 marks the 25th anniversary of John Darwell?s first exhibition. In celebration, the photographer and Director of Redeye (the photography network for the North West), Paul Herrmann, has curated this important retrospective for Tullie House, using his experience and insight as a photographer to make very personal connections with Darwell?s back catalogue of projects. Working closely with Darwell, Herrmann will concentrate on images that singly, and in combination, both redraw the impression we have of John Darwell as a photographer, and present us with a view of the world as fresh and compelling as the day the work was made.   Each of John Darwell?s projects takes us on both an internal and external journey. Early projects, such as Working Lives, Legacy and The Big Ditch, focused particularly on political and social themes, but resonated because of their intensely personal perspective. Meanwhile, later work such as Black Dog Came Calling and The Garden of Earthly Delights is overtly personal, but gives us images that can be taken as universal metaphors. When presenting his images to an audience, Darwell often describes himself as an ?explorer? and elaborates that this is an internal as well as external process. Also important is the trajectory of recent social history, from 70s activism to 90s hedonism and beyond. John Darwell?s work both grows from that and challenges it.    The exhibition will be accompanied by a luscious 80 page colour illustrated book reviewing the work of John Darwell. The book includes essays from the exhibition curator, Paul Harrmann and from Simon Grennan.
