(OPB2 036) Maria Lax - Taken by the Tide
Lax, MariaTaken by the Tide is limited to 500 numbered copies, each including a 4x5 inch original print that has been signed by the artist.
Our first book with Finnish artist Maria Lax explores the ideas of home, memory and place. Returning to her hometown after many years abroad, Lax realized that the place she once knew no longer in existed — except in her memory. Feeling as though she was drifting in search for a place to call home, Lax set out to create Taken by the Tide. The images in this book present a world where the familiar appears alien, and crashing waves from the rising tide pull one further out to the open sea of loneliness.
Maria Lax is a Finnish artist based in London. Her work deals with the concept of identity, belief and modern folklore through photography and film, and is exhibited internationally. Lax was a winner of British Journal of Photography’s Female in Focus awards, 2019 and a finalist in the BJP Portrait of Humanity, 2020. She was a PHMuseum Photography Grant Finalist in 2020; selected as one of the ‘Best New Talent of Photo London 2020’ by the Guardian; and received the Finnish Art Promotion Centre’s One Year Grant in 2021.
