A heavy 2 volume slip cased set Since 1978, French photographer Fr?d?ric Brenner has been chronicling the Jewish Diaspora by producing visual social histories of Jewish communities. Diaspora is the two-volume record in images and words of his 25-year search for Jewish communities over five continents. Volume I is Brenner's selection of 260 black and white photographs out of his archive of 80,000, ranging from workers and children in Birobidzhan, the former Soviet Union's Jewish autonomous region, to a Jewish Harley-Davidson motorcycle club posed on their bikes in front of a Miami Beach synagogue; from thoughtful portraits of Jewish writers living in modern Austria and Germany to those of mothers in Argentina, haunted by the loss of their children at the hands of the secret police. The only color photographs in the book show a yellow swatch of cloth printed with the stars Jews were forced to wear in Nazi Germany, and an entire room covered in the same cloth?a photograph commissioned for the Vienna State Opera that hung as a stage curtain there. Volume II contains essays, intellectual commentary, and the words of those in the photographs. This massive album captures the scope and dynamism of one of the world's oldest and most diverse communities, and challenges stereotypes held by Jews and non-Jews alike. The volumes are presented in a heavy, laminated slipcase. Author Frederic Brenner. Publisher HarperCollins Format 2 vols. ISBN 9780060087784 Pages/Publication Date 508/2003
